STORY TIME!
A patient is at their annual physical. Their doctor tells them that that their cholesterol is elevated and recommends that they clean up their diet and exercise regularly. The patient returns several months later only to find out that their cholesterol levels have not improved.
"But doctor....I have been going to the gym three times per week," the patient exclaims. The doctor discovers that although the patient has been going to the gym, they have not modified
their diet at all.
OK, now I know what you are thinking..."what on earth does this have to do with dentistry and fluoride treatments?" We're glad you asked!
Much like diet and exercise go hand-in-hand, fluoride treatments and good homecare do also. Neither is a substitute for the other.
The fluoride treatments (fluoride varnish) that we place on your child's teeth will continue to work months after it's application, but is never a substitute for good home care. Professional fluoride applications, brushing twice a day and flossing every day - as well as avoiding sticky, sugary snacks - are all key in prevention of decay.
QUICK TIP: Children need help with brushing and flossing until at least age 8.
