“Why do you charge cancellation fees?”
Cancellation policies and fees are becoming more standard in most dental and medical offices, (and even in service industries such as beauty salons, day spas, and so on) with 48 hours becoming more of the norm. In our office, cancellations under 48 hours (or failure to show for an appointment) will incur a charge.
As a courtesy, we begin reminder communications one week ahead of time. This allows sufficient time for patients who may have forgotten they scheduled their appointment during an inopportune time a chance to let us know they are not able to come for their appointment. This provides us with the ability to offer patients who are on a waiting list a chance to come in for their scheduled treatment sooner, or in some cases, accommodate an emergency.
Similarly, we also have a policy regarding lateness. We are unique in that we see one patient at a time and dedicate each patient’s visit entirely to them. We respect our patient’s time, which is why we run on-time consistently. To maintain such promptness, we must run a tight and efficient schedule. If a patient is going to be late, we will often reschedule that patient so we do not run into the next patient’s appointment time.
