I HAVE DENTURES...DO I STILL NEED TO VISIT MY DENTIST?
Yes, you still need to visit your dentist. This is a common question – and misconception – that if a person has dentures, they do not need to visit the dentist since they have no teeth. But your oral health isn’t just about your teeth – it is also about your entire oral anatomy such as your tongue, cheeks, lips, gums and jaws.
YOU DON'T NEED TEETH TO DEVELOP ORAL CANCER
At every routine visit, we perform an oral cancer exam. A visual inspection of your lips, tongue, throat and all oral tissue/structures is done, as well as pressing down on the floor of your mouth to check for any unusual lumps, bumps or sensitivity.
YOU DON'T NEED TEETH TO DEVELOP PROBLEMS WITHIN THE UPPER AND LOWER JAWS
When we take x-rays of your teeth, we also capture images of the bone surrounding your teeth. Even though your teeth may be missing, you still have bone that needs to be checked periodically with x-rays to be sure that no abnormalities are present.
YOUR DENTURES SHOULD PERIODICALLY BE INSPECTED FOR FIT
Bone structure and tissue can change over time, which could affect the fit of your dentures. Poorly fitting dentures can cause other problems such as pressure sores, headaches, misaligned jaws and can also affect one’s ability to chew and speak.
