What is an Orthodontic Refinement?
Clear aligners are a great alternative to traditional metal braces. Similar to braces, clear aligners use gradual force to move teeth. The aligners are made of a special clear plastic material and each set is designed to move teeth in increments until the desired result is achieved.
For most patients, the teeth move perfectly into place, however, for some patients this may not be the case and a little “fine-tuning” may be needed. When this happens, a new set of aligners may be needed to “refine” the process. This is called an Orthodontic Refinement and takes place near or at the end of your treatment.
If a refinement is needed, we will send new 3D scans and a few new photographs to the orthodontic lab. The number of aligners in the refinement treatment plan is contingent on how much more movement needs to take place but is typically a much shorter process than the original treatment.
