"I don't like my smile." That's usually the first statement that comes out of the mouth of a patient who is having a consultation for cosmetic dental work. The second statement is usually coupled with a picture of a movie star... "I want my smile to look like THAT." So what's with the White Picket Fence title? We're glad you asked! When you look at a white picket fence, what do you see? A perfectly straight, white line...which is what patients ask for when they are ready to proceed with changing the look of their smile. Can we help you with that? Absolutely...but first we need to gather enough information to present realistic options to you.
Anyone who has ever had any home remodeling done knows that long before the contractor even touches your home, there is that planning stage when structural assessments are done, photos are taken, blueprints are drawn up and then presented back to the homeowner for discussion. Sometimes a specialist, like an architect, is also consulted with. This is very similar to what we do, but on a much smaller scale, of course! To gather our information, along with a full examination, we also take a series of photographs, x-rays, and we also fabricate study models made from impressions of your teeth and surrounding structures. We may (with your permission) consult with a specialist as well.
What is Occlusion? Why is it Important?
Have you ever heard us use the word occlusion but wondered what it meant? Occlusion refers to the position of your teeth when your jaw is closed, or simply put, we are referring to your bite. The alignment of your bite contributes greatly to your oral health and is one of the important factors in determining the proper course of treatment. Misaligned teeth can result in issues such as uneven wear patterns, chipped/fractured teeth, gum recession, headaches and jaw pain, to name a few. Correcting these issues may become necessary before we move onto restoring your smile.
Facial Aesthetics
The reason why we take photographs of your face in different positions is because your desired smile needs to match your face! Did you know that our faces are not symmetrical? Yes, we have two sides, but they are slightly different from one side to the other. When designing a new smile, we focus on natural shaping, shading and arrangement so that your smile matches YOU and looks beautiful but not unnatural.
