Preparing for the birth of a baby is such an exciting time! During your pregnancy, you will work closely with your obstetrician to be sure that both you and your unborn baby are healthy - but don't forget your dentist, who is also an important part of your care during this time. Although dental visits may not be on your to-do list during her pregnancy, here are some reasons why they should be:
*You are at increased risk for gingivitis. Rising and fluctuating hormones can exacerbate existing conditions but also create new ones, both in your body and in your mouth. Even if you didn't have gingivitis before pregnancy, it is not uncommon for a woman to develop this during pregnancy. Although it is more commonly seen in the 2nd and 3rd trimester, pregnancy-related gingivitis can develop at any point and may even continue after delivery, until hormones return to normal levels.
*You are at increased risk for decay. Dietary changes (such as consuming more carbohydrates), morning sickness and/or vomiting can increase the levels of acidity in your mouth, which increases the likelihood of developing cavities.
*Oral health plays a major role in your overall health. Lack of oral hygiene allows the bacteria we already have present in our mouths to multiply to the point where they cause gum inflammation, which allows decay, gum disease and dental infections to form. And that inflammation doesn’t just stay in your mouth – it travels through your body, which can cause a host of secondary problems both for you and your unborn baby.
Regular brushing and flossing at home and staying on schedule with your cleanings during pregnancy will not only help you maintain good oral health, but will also allow us to address and treat any developing issues while they are still in their early stages.
